NATCHITOCHES, La. – After having to wait an extra day due to weather, it was the Northwestern State Demons who came out hot early as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 13-2 in seven innings to avoid the sweep on Monday at Brown-Stroud Field.
Both staters carried their teams through an efficient first inning but the Demons got on the board in the second on a Bo Willis solo home run. Privateers starter,
Cortez Dennis induced a double play ball and got a strikeout to limit the damage to just a run as the Privateers trailed 1-0 heading into the third.
That's where Northwestern State sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven runs to extend their lead to 8-0. Samuel Stephenson hit a two-run double and Willis also drove a double that scored two. The scoring for the frame was capped off with a three-run homer by Colin Rains.
New Orleans got on the board in the sixth inning.
Victor Castillo and
Diego Villescas each worked their way aboard.
Mitchell Sanford then lined a single into left for his 65
th RBI of the season to get the Privateers in the run column. Another run scored but Northwestern State also turned a double play to turn the tide in the frame.
The score stayed at 9-2 until the seventh. Hayden Knotts singled to drive in a run. Clay Jung then pinch hit for JD DiPrima and hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh that ended the game in a run rule.
With the loss, New Orleans now needs to sweep Lamar and needs one Nicholls loss to clinch at least a share of the regular season championship.
