Privateers Save Three Match Points but Fall to Southern at Florida A&M Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The New Orleans Privateers came up with some crucial points to extend the third set but ultimately lost a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 28-26) decision to the Southern Jaguars on Saturday at the Florida A&M Invitational.

New Orleans fought off match point three times with kills by Courtney Roundtree, Jaedyn Newman and Ava Kennon. The second kill by Newman was credited after a net violation on Southern, a call that withstood the scrutiny of a lengthy review after a challenge.

However, the Southern offense responded with two consecutive kills by Zaria Nelson and Jordan Felix to give the Jaguars their first victory of the season.

New Orleans was in the fight throughout but found themselves chasing on the scoreboard in the biggest moments. That began in the first set when Southern went on a three-point mini spurt to break an 8-8 tie.

The Jaguars never trailed for the remainder of the set. New Orleans saved two set points but a kill by MiaBella English finished off the opening set in favor of Southern.

In the second set, New Orleans grabbed a 10-9 advantage off a Chelsea Daffin kill. The Jaguars provided a big response though by scoring on 11 of the next 15 rallies to grab the lead and grow it to 20-13.

INSIDE THE BOX
Newman landed just shy of a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs. Roundtree added eight kills and two blocks. Daffin finished with eight kills and a team-high 17 digs. Kennon went for six kills and a .556 attack percentage in nine attempts. Alexis Belarmino had 22 assists and Defne Eciroglu finished with 14 assists.

NEXT UP
The Privateers are back home next Saturday and Sunday to face Alcorn State and Florida A&M at the Human Performance Center.
