Privateers Prevail in Overtime Against Lions

NEW ORLEANS — The University of New Orleans women's basketball team (1-15, 1-6 Southland) snapped its 16-game losing streak with a 66-62 overtime victory over East Texas A&M (4-12, 1-6 Southland) on Saturday afternoon.

Playing their first overtime period of the season, a layup from Brianna Ellis gave the Privateers a 63-61 lead with 32 seconds left. Cora Horvath split a pair of free throws on the other end before Aaliyah Ellis drew a foul from Jasmine Payne on the ensuing possession.

Playing in her home state, Aaliyah was only able to split a pair of free throws, but Jayla Kimbrough came up with the offensive rebound and putback to seal the victory for the Privateers.







 
INSIDE THE BOX
Alexis Calderon led the Privateers in scoring with 15 points on seven made baskets in 42 minutes. Brianna Ellis joined her in double-figure scoring with 14 points, making all five of her shot attempts. Jayla Kimbrough recorded her fourth double-double of the season after scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Cora Horvath led the Lions in scoring with 19 points to go with her seven rebounds. Nina Horvath finished behind her sister with 14 points and three rebounds. Jordyn Newsome was the third Lion in double figures with 13 points. Aliva Hedrich pulled down 12 of the Lions' 47 rebounds.

UNO outscored East Texas A&M 11-7 in the extra period for its first overtime win since February 2020, snapping a streak of eight straight overtime losses. UNO's 49 rebounds were its second most this season (50 at Texas Tech). They held the Lions to 34.3 percent shooting from the field, their second-best defensive performance this season after holding South Alabama to 33.8 percent in November.

The Privateer women return to action when they host UIW on Jan. 23 at Lakefront Arena. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night with the game airing live on ESPN+.
