NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team saw a game-tying three pointer fall just short as they lost a hard-fought battle 58-55 to the UIW Cardinals on Monday at Lakefront Arena.
With 56.7 seconds remaining, the Privateers got a stop and then called timeout. After forcing a shot clock violation, New Orleans had their first chance to tie or take the lead in the waning moments of the contest.
Jayla Kimbrough drew a foul but could not convert on the free throws.
The Privateers then fouled Myra Bell who made 1-of-2 which left the door open to tie the game.
Brialle Washington put up a triple that fell just short as the Cardinals held through a game that saw 13 lead changes.
New Orleans exemplified strong defense throughout the first half which helped them build a seven-point lead at the break. They held the Cardinals under 40 percent from the field. Meanwhile on offense, New Orleans had 10 first half assists and led 29-22 at the break.
UIW responded out of the locker room with an 11-2 run that gave them their first lead of the second half. However, it was the Privateers who controlled the final moments of the penultimate stanza. They engineered a 6-0 spurt to take a 44-39 lead into the fourth.
Though the Privateers controlled the battle on the boards for the game (40-32), UIW had a 13-6 advantage on the glass in the fourth quarter.
Brynn Lusby led the Cardinals in scoring with 15 points. Jorja Elliott finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
INSIDE THE BOX
Alexis Calderon led the Privateers with 17 points and added seven rebounds along with four assists. Kimbrough was 6-of-11 from the field and finished with 14 points. Washington added eight points and
Brianna Ellis had seven points along with five rebounds.
