NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers got off to a strong start and held a lead most of the way but could not hold off a UTRGV charge in a 64-62 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Lakefront Arena.
New Orleans held a 10-point lead going the fourth quarter but UTRGV slowly started to rally their way back in it. The Vaqueros scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter and took the lead on two Chyna Mitchell free throws. A Gianna Angolet three-pointer extended the UTRGV lead to 60-56.

Alexis Calderon helped the Privateers level the score at 62-62. However, Kade Hackerott scored on a layup on the next possession to give UTRGV a two-point lead with 1:48 left.
New Orleans had three missed shots and a turnover, which finished out the contest.
The Privateers used strong defense and limited the Vaqueros to one-and-out possessions more consistently as the first half went along. UTRGV was only 4-of-20 from the field in the first quarter. Meanwhile, New Orleans steadily crept away to a 16-8 lead after 10 minutes.
On offense, New Orleans got a balanced effort from the starting lineup offensively. All five starters had at least five points by the halftime break while Calderon led all scorers through 20 minutes with 11 points. At the half, the Privateers led UTRGV 38-24.
Defensively, Calderon recorded her 100
th steal in a Privateer uniform in her 42
nd game. She became the 34
th in program history to reach the century mark in steals.
INSIDE THE BOX
Calderon had 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Gabbi Cartagena finished just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Nora Francois scored 14 points. As a team, the Privateers had 17 assists to 10 turnovers.

The Privateers will travel to Beaumont to face Lamar on Thursday, Jan. 9. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
