CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers hit .500 in the third set, but they fell on the short end of that set and the match 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-20) to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday at Dugan Wellness Center.
The third set was tight throughout and the Privateers found themselves trailing by only two points at 22-20 when the Islanders used their final timeout of the set. New Orleans hit .500 in the third set and was matching the Islanders' offense.
However, a Privateer service error followed by two Tatum Mason kills closed out proceedings for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Islanders took over the opening set by scoring 11 of 13 points after both teams split the opening ten rallies of the match. Ally Saleh and Tatum Mason each had two kills in that stretch and the Islanders hit .433 in the opening set.
New Orleans came out of the gate strong in the second set behind a
Vanae Sapp kill and a
Laura Piva ace to take a 4-1 lead, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi responded by scoring seven of the next eight points to grab an 8-5 lead.
The Privateers were within range trailing 15-11 in the second set, but committed three attack errors and two service errors that led to the Islanders creating more separation on the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead in the match.
Mason had 14 kills to lead the Islanders. Kenna Buchanan finished with 10 kills and Virginia Van Der Werff had 37 assists.
INSIDE THE BOX
Piva and
Alessandra Meoni co-led the offense with seven kills apiece.
Courtney Roundtree had five kills while
Ryan Williams and
Ava Kennon each had four kills. Meoni also led the team in digs with eight. Kennon was in on two blocks on the night.
