THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers came back from down early in the third set to take a late lead but could not hold off a final Nicholls charge in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-21) loss at Stopher Gym in the regular season finale.
The Privateers came back from an early five-point deficit in the third set and surged ahead 18-14 at one point behind three
Ava Kennon kills and three blocks at the net.
After
Vanae Sapp converted a kill to put the Privateers ahead 21-17 in the third set, Nicholls came back with eight consecutive points behind three service aces. The Colonels wrapped up a match in which they had 12 service aces and had a 45-34 edge in the kill department over the Privateers.
The Colonels started off hot with 11 kills and no errors in their first 24 attempts as they built a lead as large as eight when they were ahead 18-10. Tamara Chavez had six kills in the first set for the Colonels and Maelie Chupin and Harper Holden each had three kills to begin the evening.
New Orleans was within range early as they trailed 9-7 in the second set. That's when Nicholls went on a run of eight consecutive points to stretch their lead to double figures. Nicholls had 16 kills to the Privateers' seven in the second set.
Chavez had 24 kills to pace the Colonels' offense. Holden finished with seven kills and Chupin added six kills. Isabella Padilla had 33 assists and Ava-Claire Calais had a team-high 12 digs.
INSIDE THE BOX
Alessandra Meoni led the Privateer offense with 13 kills and added six digs and four total blocks. Sapp finished with six kills and eight digs. Kennon had five kills and
Ania Anderson added four kills.
Peyton Cole had seven digs while
Lani Alleman and
Defne Eciroglu each had five digs.
