NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers fought through an early deficit and kept within range until a big offensive finish helped Tulane pull away to a 95-71 win on Sunday at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday.
Tulane raced to an early 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of the contest as four different Green Wave players scored to set the tone. However, the Privateers steadied things and the rest of the half was played with no difference on the scoreboard.
New Orleans forced 14 turnovers by the Green Wave in the first half. Leading scorer,
Shanihya Brown had nine points in the first quarter and
Brialle Washington added seven points in the first half.
After Washington drilled a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining, the Privateers got a stop on defense. At the half, Tulane led by a score of 39-29.
The Privateers got the deficit to as small as seven points in the second half when
Jayla Kimbrough nailed a jumper to cut the Green Wave lead to 50-43. From there, Tulane scored 45 points in the final 15 minutes as they pulled away from the Privateers in the second half.
Tulane shot 52.4 percent for the game and just over 54 percent in the second half. They also hit 11 of 27 three-point attempts on the afternoon.
The Green Wave had four players in double figures led by Kendall Sneed who had 18. CC Mays finished with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds). Amira Mabry added 17 points and seven rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX
Brown had her second game of 20 points as a Privateer uniform. She also added six steals, five rebounds and four assists. Washington finished with 13 points and five steals. Kimbrough added 10 points and five rebounds.
Aaliyah Ellis and
Hailee Brennen each had six points. The Privateers forced 24 Green Wave turnovers.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will play their last game before the holiday break on Thursday when they host UIW on Thursday, Dec. 18. Tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
