Women's Basketball Falls in Road Contest at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers could not overcome a hot start by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in an 85-54 loss on Wednesday afternoon at the Hilliard Center.
 
The Islanders began a hot-shooting first half with a 16-4 run by the first quarter media timeout. Asha Walker had a pair of triples to help the Islanders gain significant early distance on their lead.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went on another run of threes as they had a stretch of four long distance makes in six possessions during a near three-minute span in the second quarter. The Islanders led 49-18 at halftime and had made 10 threes to that point. Walker had 19 first half points and made six threes.
 
The game was put out of reach early as the Islanders shot 52 percent in the first half compared to 23 percent for the Privateers. Also, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outrebounded New Orleans 22-15 and had a 17-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
Jayla Kimbrough scored eight points for the Privateers in the third quarter and went 4-of-5 from the field but the Privateers could not make a dent in the Islanders' lead in the penultimate stanza.
 
Torie Sevier (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Rayna Williams (10 points, 10 rebounds) both had a double-double for the Islanders. Samora Watson finished with 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Jayla Kimbrough scored 15 points to lead all Privateers with 12 of those coming in the second half. Brialle Washington scored 11 points. Hailee Brennen added 12 points and five rebounds. Lauren Banks led the team in rebounds with eight.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers return home to face East Texas A&M on Saturday at 2 p.m.
