Privateers Get Clutch Late Stop, Hold Off UIW

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers got a clutch stop in the final seconds of the game as they held off the UIW Cardinals 84-83 to score their first conference win on Monday night at Lakefront Arena.

Off a missed shot with 11 second remaining, UIW's Jordan Pyke got the rebound. The ball got to Southland leading scorer, Davion Bailey who missed a contested layup. The Cardinals got the offensive rebound but could not get off another shot as the horn sounded.

New Orleans (3-7, 1-1) came out on fire on the defensive end of the floor. The Cardinals were held to just five points in the first seven minutes of the game while the Privateers steadily built an 11-point advantage in that span behind seven early points from TJ Cope.

The Privateers led by as many as 15 points and shot 58.3 percent from the field for the game, which is their highest single game total since March of 2021. That included an eye-popping 80 percent clip from the field in the second half alone as New Orleans connected on 16-of-20 shots.

UIW scored 57 second half points to put the pressure on the Privateers throughout the closing minutes and they grabbed their first lead on a Harold Woods layup with 3:52 remaining.

The Privateers responded on the next possession, as Coleton Benson nailed a three-pointer and was fouled. After he completed the four-point play, the Privateers went back ahead 80-78.

UIW tied the game again with two free throws from Pyke, but New Orleans got the lead back for good when Jakevion Buckley scored on a jumper with 1:25 remaining. Bailey was fouled while shooting a three for the Cardinals but missed two of three ensuing free throws.

The Cardinals shot 63.3 percent in the second half and made eight triples. Bailey and Tahj Staveskie combined for 52 points for the Cardinals (5-5, 1-2).
