NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers got out to a quick initial start, but fell behind late in the first quarter and could not recover in a 72-59 loss to the Nicholls Colonels on Thursday evening at Lakefront Arena.
The Privateers got out to an 8-0 lead and drilled a pair of triples in that stretch. The defense also forced four turnovers by the first media timeout. However, the Colonels adjusted and made four of their last five field goals to charge in front 16-11 after the first quarter.
In the second, the Colonels continued their momentum early as they built up a lead as large as 16 at one point. During the second, Nicholls got eight free throw trips and converted seven. Despite only shooting 37.5 percent from the field in the first half, the Colonels took a 37-24 lead into the locker room.
New Orleans got the deficit down to single digits several different times. The closest they got in the second half was within seven points after
Nora Francois scored a bucket and converted a bonus free throw to make the score 58-51 with just over four minutes remaining.
The Colonels responded by scoring on three of their next four possessions to get the lead back into double figures. Nicholls finished the game by going 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the field in the final ten minutes to secure their ninth conference win and their 16
th overall.
Both teams had the same number of turnovers (22) and points off turnovers (19). The Colonels had a 16-point advantage in the paint.
Malaya Jones finished with 17 points in 27 minutes. Britiya Curtis added 10 points and Violette Skipworth had 12.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jasmine Jones and Francois had the same stat line with 13 points and seven rebounds each. They both combined to go 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Shanihya Brown added 10 points, three steals and three assists.
Brialle Washington finished with nine points.
