Franzmann Rallies in Second Set, Privateers Defeat Jackson State

NEW ORLEANSJulian Franzmann rallied from behind twice in the second set to a straight set victory that sealed the New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team's 4-0 win over Jackson State on Wednesday at the Privateer Tennis Center.

Franzmann breezed through the first set without dropping a game but had to battle back from an early deficit in the second set. The freshman broke serve to get to 5-5 and the set was eventually pushed to a tiebreak after Franzmann had to break again.

In the tiebreak, Franzmann hit a service ace while down 3-1 and that sent him on a run of six of the next seven points won to clinch the match for the Privateers.

"I was pleased with the way we played in doubles to get the first point. Everybody is playing with a lot of confidence," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "Julian is mentally tough and he has a great future ahead of him. This is a team with a lot of young players and they're all playing solid tennis."

New Orleans started the day with a solid performance in doubles. Joseph Townes and Jay Temming were the first off the court after a 6-1 victory at flight two. Franzmann and David Tesic brought home the first point after a 7-5 win at flight three.

In singles, the Privateers got a pair of straight set victories around Franzmann to set the stage. Joseph Townes was ahead early in his first set at 5-2 and held off a late rally from Ching Chang Chiu. Then Townes continued his momentum into the second set where he won 6-1.

Temming held off Fabrizo Fallas 6-4 in the opening set. He kept the pressure on throughout the second set and only dropped one game there in victory.
