CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team cut a 12-point halftime deficit down to three early in the fourth but were ultimately denied as they lost 90-76 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday at the American Bank Center.
 
With the loss, the Privateers have been eliminated from the race for the last spot in the Southland Tournament.
 
The Privateers got within a possession after an 
Alexis Calderon jumper at the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarter. The Islanders responded by going 5-of-7 from the field in the closing minutes to seal the victory. They also went 12-of-16 from the free throw line. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi now holds the last slot in the tournament.
 
It was a back-and-forth affair through the first eight minutes of the opening quarter as there were six ties. The Privateers also had the lead at four different parts of that opening stretch. The last advantage was at 15-14 when 
Jasmine Jones made a layup and a bonus free throw.
 
The Islanders then went on a 6-0 spurt to end the first quarter. That defensive momentum carried for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi into the second quarter as they held the Privateers to nine points on 4-of-20 from the field. The Islanders carried a 36-24 advantage into the half.
 
New Orleans came out firing on all cylinders offensively in the third quarter. Led by 
Brialle Washington's 12 points in the stanza, the Privateers went for 28 points while connecting on 11-of-17 field goal attempts. The Privateers got within single digits by the end of the quarter as they trailed by eight heading to the fourth.
 
Five Islanders scored in double figures for the first time this season led by Tymberlin Criswell's 15 points. Paige Allen had 13 points and 14 rebounds.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Washington led the Privateers with 17 points on the night and added five rebounds and three assists. 
Nora Francois finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. 
Gabbi Cartagena added 13 points. The Privateers outscored the Islanders 36-32 in the paint.
