NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team pulled through a tough doubles point and finished the first three matches of singles in their favor to clinch a 4-0 victory over the Xavier Gold Rush on Wednesday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
Matthew Armbruster and
Sep de Visser got the day started with a solid win in doubles. The tandem, playing at flight one, jumped out to a sizable lead with an early service break in their pocket and they carried that momentum to a 6-3 win.
"They played a solid Xavier team," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I was really pleased with how they executed their game plan in doubles and that carried momentum into singles. Across the board we controlled the tempo and I'm proud with how these guys played."
Joseph Townes and
Jay Temming had to battle back from down a service break early on at 3-2, but they delivered a 6-4 victory against Gabriel Velez and Ivan Vazquez to clinch the doubles point for the Privateers.
Once the action got to singles, the Privateers controlled the play at several courts.
Marius Gyllerup, who made his collegiate debut, held serve in the tenth game of the opening set to win 6-4. He took flight from there and coasted to wrap up the second set 6-1.
Marc Mail also controlled the tempo at flight two. After he took the first set 6-2, Mail won the first four games of the second set. Mail only dropped three games the entire match as he dusted off the second set 6-1.
Armbruster was the man to clinch for the Privateers on the day. After taking the first set by a double break, he and Nereo Suarez kept exchanging service breaks in the second set. Armbruster finished off the match though as he executed a backhand shot down the line for match point in a 6-2, 6-4 win.
The win was the first for the Privateers against Xavier since 2021.
David Tesic was one game away from clinching his match when play was halted.
Julian Franzmann won a lengthy first set 7-5 and was down 0-3 in the second. De Visser was serving in the third set and was on the brink of leveling the score at 4-4.
The Privateers will face Southern Miss on Saturday at 2 p.m.
