NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team began the day with a strong showing in doubles and carried that momentum to a 4-0 victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
The doubles tandems controlled the flow from the outset.
Joseph Townes and
Jay Temming got out to a quick start and never looked back as they won their match 6-1 at flight three.
Matthew Armbruster and
Sep de Visser repeated that score line at flight one as they were victorious by a 6-1 score to send the match to singles.
Armbruster, who won the clinching point, was clinical in his match particularly down the stretch as he won the last five games of the second set to secure a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ricards Sparks at flight two.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way these guys executed from beginning to end," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "In doubles, we were flawless and we played well across the board. The momentum carried over from there. Sep was on fire and he played a great match. David and Matthew were methodical in their wins. It was a good day for UNO."
David Tesic withstood a rally by Rasmus Becker in the middle of the first set and dominated the second set while not dropping a game. Going back to the first set, he won eight consecutive games in his 6-3, 6-0 victory.
The other win belonged to de Visser who ended his first set quickly against Charlie Brady. In the second, it was a rugged battle but de Visser took it by a single break as he won his match 6-0, 6-4.
The victory is the fourth for the Privateers over the Golden Eagles in their last five meetings.
Marius Gyllerup had just started the third set at flight six.
Julian Franzmann won a grueling first set tiebreak 12-10 and was up a break in the second set.
Marc Mail was down a set and a break at 6-3, 5-4.
