NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams were both defeated by a 5-2 score against the UTRGV Vaqueros on Saturday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.
MEN'S RECAP
The Vaqueros notched the doubles point to begin the day as they won at both flight two and three. Ivo Isqueiro and Eduardo Menezes notched a 6-1 victory while Sam Whitehead and Paolo Bonaguro won 6-3 at flight two. The remaining match was tied 5-5 at flight one.
In singles, the Vaqueros got a 6-1, 6-4 win from Loic Young Kriegel.
David Tesic nailed down the Privateers' first point with a 6-3, 6-4 win at flight five.
The remaining matches all went three sets.
Menezes kept the Vaqueros ahead as he won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to respond to
Julian Franzmann's three-set win (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) at flight three.
It came down to the top two flights and UTRGV clinched it at flight one. Whitehead won the last three games of the final set to score a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-5 win to give the Vaqueros their sixth victory of the spring. Isquerio closed it out when he took the final three games of the last set to win 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3.
WOMEN'S RECAP
The Privateer women, once again playing with only five available players were left with too much to do in a 5-2 loss to UTRGV.
Rhea Makesar and Mariia Bakhtina scored a 6-1 victory at flight two in doubles. Coupled with the forfeit at flight three, UTRGV took the opening point of the day.
The Privateers got points from
Kateryna Kalistratova and
Fleur Sprengers. At flight two, Sprengers dominated her match, only conceding three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kristal Dule.
Kalistratova rallied from down a set to defeat Makesar 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Privateers their other point on the day.
Two other matches were hanging firmly in the balance. UTRGV won both as Yaiza Vazquez won two long sets in her 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory at flight three. Hitakamya Narwal came out ahead of a three-set affair 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at flight five.
NEXT UP
Both teams are slated to play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday.
