Men's Tennis Sweeps St. Mary's, Shorthanded Women's Team Cannot Overcome Rattlers

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team controlled the action early and finished off a sweep with two thrilling third set tiebreaks in a 7-0 win over the St. Mary's Rattlers on Friday at the Privateer Tennis Center.

The women's team, which was shorthanded going in, and had another player retire during the match, suffered a 7-0 defeat to St. Mary's.

MEN'S RECAP
The Privateer men were solid across the board in doubles to set the tone as they quickly jumped out to double break leads on courts one and three. Returning to the lineup, Matthew Armbruster and Sep de Visser won the first five games as they earned a 6-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Julian Franzmann and Marc Mail had a similar start at flight three as they went on to win 6-1. Joseph Townes and Jay Temming finished the sweep in doubles and moved their record to 6-1 on the season after a 6-3 decision.

In singles, the Privateers got a quick start from Franzmann who jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set. He eventually won his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. At flight six, de Visser held off Aaron Ben Anton in the first set and coasted in the second set to a 7-5, 6-2 win.

Mail and David Tesic finished their matches in straight sets. Mail won 6-3, 6-1 while Tesic pulled away in a second set tiebreak to win 6-0, 7-6 (2).

With the match already in hand, Armbruster and Townes both played 10-point tiebreaks in the third set. Armbruster rallied from down 8-2 as he ripped off eight straight points to win 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. Townes finished his match with a volley winner at the net as he rallied from down a set to win 5-7, 7-5, 10-7.

"The men were methodical and they played a good match across the board today," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "I think our experience playing some tough teams this season helped us. They're all working together and fighting for each other."

WOMEN'S RECAP
The women started the match behind with only five available players with Iris Danne unable to play today. The Rattlers won the doubles point to go ahead 2-0 and got a third point at flight one after Anastassia Kouchnareva was unable to continue in her match.

Alessia Terlizzi won the point that secured the match for St. Mary's as she earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at flight three.

The remainder of the matches saw the Privateers push St. Mary's to the limit. Kateryna Kalistratova forced a third set tiebreak after winning her second set but Janel Ospanova prevailed in the 10-point tiebreak.

Ananya Dhankhar came back from down 5-2 in the second set to tit the score at 5-5, but Gia Posito got a late service break to win 7-5, 7-5.

Nouray Khaled had an early lead in the 10-point third set tiebreak, but Paula Garrote came back to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.
