Box Score NEW ORLEANS –
Fleur Sprengers and
Nouray Khaled both picked up singles victories, but the New Orleans Privateers were defeated 5-2 in the match against the Tulane Green Wave on Monday at City Park.
Sprengers raced out to an early lead against Jiayun Zhu and finished off the first set with only one game lost. The true freshman won 6-1, 6-3 to pick up what is her team-leading fifth singles win of the spring.
Khaled was strong in a 10-point tiebreak as she outlasted her opponent, Micah Pierce. After Khaled won the first set 6-3, Pierce took the second by a single break at 6-4. With the match already decided, the two played in a race to 10 points which Khaled won 10-7.
"Nouray and Fleur played great matches today," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I'm really pleased with the performance they contributed to this match. I'm proud of the way we competed overall. It shows us what this team is capable of accomplishing."
Tulane started the day by winning on courts one and three for the doubles point. Campbell Ricci and Leigh Van Zyl stayed undefeated on the season (4-0) with a 6-3 win. Meanwhile, Zhu and Natalie Fantini won 6-0 at flight three.
In the remaining singles matches, the Green Wave won them in straight sets. Summer Chandler won 6-2, 6-2 in her first match at flight one this season. Van Zyl won 6-1, 6-4 at flight two.
Fantini won 6-4, 6-0 at flight five and Brooke Theis scored a 6-4, 6-4 win at flight six to move the Green Wave to 5-3.
