Men's Tennis Endures Three Rain Delays in Victory Over UTRGV to Open Southland Tournament

THIBODAUX, La.Joseph Townes rallied from a set down and clinched the match with a resilient performance as the New Orleans Privateers scored a 4-1 win over the UTRGV Vaqueros on Thursday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

Townes was a huge part of a strong performance by the Privateers as they avenged a regular season loss against the Vaqueros. Townes and Temming battled through a tiebreak after coming back from a break down. The duo converted match point on their second time of asking to give New Orleans a critical opening point.

Townes carried that momentum through a tough battle in the first set. He was down an early break in the third as well, but Townes rattled off six of the next seven games to storm back to a 6-3 third set that sent the Privateers to a semifinal bout against 1-seed, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday.

"These guys showed up to play and the doubles point was huge," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "They played with confidence and conviction and we were in control across the board today. I'm so proud of this team and the way they played today."

When the match broke into singles the Privateers got two wins on the board quickly between Marc Mail and Julian Franzmann.

Mail broke in the opening game of the match and that set the tone as he controlled the tempo throughout the day on court one. He held off a late charge from Southland Player of the Year, Sam Whitehead before dominating the second set in a 6-4, 6-0 win.

Julian Franzmann also had a similar trajectory in his victory on court three. The Southland Freshman of the Year held serve to take the first set by a single break before sweeping through the second set in a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

The third rain delay of the day hit while the Privateers were up 3-0 in the match, and they had to wait over an hour for the courts to dry.

Upon return, the Vaqueros got their first point when Ivo Isqueiro came back from down a set to take the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at court two.

The remaining matches went unfinished. David Tesic was controlling his third set as he was up 4-0. Sep de Visser was in the midst of a third set tiebreak and ahead 3-2 when the match stopped.
