Box Score THIBODAUX, La. –
Matthew Armbruster pulled off a massive rally from a set down and dominated his third set as the New Orleans Privateers scored a 4-3 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders to advance to the championship match on Saturday.
Armbruster was down a break in the middle of the first set and could not find the break back. However, the resilient senior was steady throughout the second set and earned a late service break of his own to take it to a deciding set.
For the second time in his career, Armbruster came up with a big win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the tournament. His impeccable serving and relentless return game led to a break at 3-1. After earning a double break against his opponent, Omar Suarez to go up 5-1, Armbruster served out to send the Privateers to the title match against 2-seed NJIT.
"The doubles point was once again crucial today," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "Everyone on this team is responsible for where we are and there aren't enough words I can say for our seniors, Matthew and David. These guys couldn't have done a better job in keeping their composure these last two days."
The day started with the Privateers earning the doubles point in a tiebreak.
Marc Mail and
Julian Franzmann came up with a late break to win 7-5 on court three. Then Armbruster and
Sep de Visser entered a tiebreak, which they trailed by a mini break at 3-2. The Privateer duo responded by rattling off the next four points including two on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's serve on the way to a 7-5 tiebreak win.
In singles, the Islanders got two quick points to go ahead 2-1 from Nathan Favier who won 6-1, 6-1 and Josef Zapletal who won 6-1, 6-4.
New Orleans responded with the tandem of
David Tesic and Franzmann who both won their matches. Tesic got out to a big lead early in the first set by earning two service breaks as he won in straight sets. Franzmann battled through a first set against Nicolas Trebuchet before sweeping the second set to win 7-5, 6-0.
Etienne Marty tied the score for the Islanders when he won 6-2, 7-5.
