HAMMOND, La. – It came down to flight one in singles as the Southeastern Lions rallied from a set down in that match to defeat the New Orleans Privateers 4-3 on Thursday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Leana Gomez lost the first set, but secured a late service break to take the second. Then Gomez won the final set by a double break as she took the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to give Southeastern their 11
th win of the spring.
Southeastern began the evening by winning a crucial doubles point. Taisia Bolsova and Claudia Di Leonardo took their match 6-3 at flight three. That was followed by Panatchakorn Suanarsa and Bente Bierma winning their match 6-4 at flight one to secure the first point.
The Lions won the first two singles matches to finish, which gave them a 3-0 lead on the night but that's when the Privateers started their rally.
It began with
Iris Danne who won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to get the first point on the board for the Privateers.
The combination of
Fleur Sprengers and
Kateryna Kalistratova helped tie the match score. Sprengers recovered from a tough second set to dominate in the third as she won 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
Kalistratova won a critical tiebreak in the second set to force a deciding third, which she won by a wide margin. Kalistratova won 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-1 to set up the clinching point on court one.
