HOUSTON, Texas – The HCU Huskies used a five-run fourth inning to open distance on an early lead as they took an 8-3 decision over the New Orleans Privateers in the first game of the Southland Championship Series.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Jeremy Rader put down a bunt. An ensuing throwing error allowed Matthew Leiterman to score the first run of the game that gave HCU the lead.
After another run put up in the third, the Huskies struck for a big number in the fourth. Jack Walker hit an RBI single up the middle, which was followed by a double steal where Rader scored from third.
HCU then got a two-run homer from Rhett Hendricks to push their lead to 7-0 in support of Parker Edwards who threw seven shutout innings.
New Orleans looked to rally in the late stages. After two singles from
Adrian Dominguez and
Alexander Saunier, the Privateers got a three-run homer off the bat of
Tristan Moore to cut the Huskies' lead to 7-3.
The home run by Moore was his 31
st, which moves him one behind a tie for fifth place in program history.
Ferazzi eventually got out of the inning though and struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the victory for HCU, their 31
st on the season.
Walker, Leiterman and Tevis Payne each had two hits to lead the Huskies offense.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jake D'Altrui went 1-for-2 with a triple.
Bryce Calloway drew two walks while Moore, Dominugez, Saunier,
Bryan Loriga and
Collin Loupe each had a hit.
Trey Usey threw three shutout innings in relief.
