Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Emmanuel Pepis

Men's and Women's Tennis Both Remain Undefeated With Win at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss.  – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams both scored victories over the Jackson State Tigers on Wednesday at the JSU Tennis Center. The women won 4-1 while the men also won 4-1 to keep their respective records unblemished.
 
The Tigers won the doubles point with 6-1 victories at flight two and three to earn the first point of the day, but the men came back with a resolute performance in singles.
 
The Privateers' flight three through six players all scored wins in singles. Gonzalo Cotter moved up a spot in the rotation and only lost three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory to keep his singles record undefeated.
 
Carlos Melgosa continued his strong start to the season with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at flight three. Melgosa is one of three Privateers who remained undefeated in singles.
 
Evgenios Vasilakis and Marius Gyllerup also scored wins at flight five and six. Vasilakis came through a tough two sets, earning a single service break in each set for a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Gyllerup also earned a late service break in the second set to win 6-2, 7-5.
 
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly won his first set 6-4 and was trailing 3-4 in the second when the match concluded. Beltran Fernandez was up 2-0 in the deciding third set.
 
The women started their day with a doubles victory thanks to a dominant performance at flight two and a late service break making a difference at flight one. Fleur Sprengers and Danique Vermue earned a 6-2 victory for the Privateers.
 
Nouray Khaled and Kateryna Kalistratova, who were bumped up to flight one, responded with a 7-5 victory to help seal the doubles point. Jackson State scored a 6-4 win at flight three in doubles.
 
The singles matches saw Ananya Dhankhar and Sprengers both finish in straight sets. Dhankhar coasted to a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Meanwhile, Sprengers notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory at flight one.
 
The Tigers got a point from Helen Hernandez at flight four, but the Privateers were able to seal the match through Kalistratova who won 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at flight two.
 
Naila Krifa was on the verge of victory, up 5-3 in the third set when the match stopped. Khaled was early in the third set, trailing 1-2.
 
NEXT UP
Both teams will travel to Alcorn State on Feb. 19.
