Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Emmanuel Pepis

Men's and Women's Tennis Both Cruise to Victory at Alcorn State

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams got out on the front foot early and controlled the matches throughout as they both scored wins against Alcorn State. The women won 4-0 and the men won 5-0.
 
Jerall Yasin made his debut in doubles for the Privateers as he paired with Jacob Rouleau-Mailly at flight one. The duo was unrelenting in a 6-0 win as were Gonzalo Cotter and Carlos Melgosa who also did not drop a game at flight three. The match at flight two went unfinished at 3-3.
 
In singles, the Privateers had more dominance throughout the lineup. Marius Gyllerup only lost two games on his way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at flight six. Melgosa also remained undefeated by keeping his opponent off the board in the second set of a 6-4, 6-0 triumph.
 
Cotter and Beltran Fernandez also engineered wins. For Cotter, he took the opening set by a double break in his 6-2, 6-4 win. Fernandez persevered by a single break in the first set of a 6-4, 6-1 win.
 
The women continued their solid run through the season with another sweep in short order. Fleur Sprengers and Danique Vermue did not lose a game in their win at flight two. Naila Krifa and Ananya Dhankhar won 6-1 at flight three to give the Privateers the doubles point.
 
Sprengers, Dhankhar and Nouray Khaled posted the victories for the Privateers in singles on the day.
 
Sprengers and Khaled had mirrored score lines. Both women won by a double break in the first set and took six consecutive games in the second to win 6-2, 6-0. Dhankhar won her first set by a double break and held off Taylor Briffa in the second set of a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
 
The matches that went unfinished were all led by the Privateers. Krifa was up a set and a break at 3-1 in the second set. Vermue was on the doorstep of finishing as she led 6-4, 5-1. Kateryna Kalistratova led 2-1 in the third set of her match.
 
NEXT UP
The men will play Tulane on Sunday. The women will host UTSA on Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.
