Privateers Notch Eighth Road Win of Season, Top Lamar

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's basketball team got 19 points from MJ Thomas and they scored another road win as they defeated the Lamar Cardinals 77-71 on Saturday at Neches Arena at the Montagne Center.
 
The Privateers held Lamar to just 36.4 percent from the field, marking the ninth time this season New Orleans held the Cardinals to under 40 percent of their shot attempts made. It was also the Privateers' eighth road win this season, which is their most since 2007-08 when they had nine road victories.
 
Lamar had an initial surge in the first two minutes of the game as they started the evening on a 7-0 run, but the Privateers quickly clawed their way back. Coleton Benson hit a three at the 9:37 mark of the first half to tie the score at 16-16.
 
The Privateers went to the half with a 32-29 lead as they held the Cardinals to 11-of-35 from the field overall and 4-of-17 from the three-point line.
 
New Orleans carried that momentum into the early portion of the second half as they stretched their lead to double digits by the first media timeout after beginning the half on a 10-2 run.
 
From there, the Privateers led by double digits for most of the remainder of the game. They had a lead as big as 19 points when Panagiotis Pagonis hit a three-pointer to make the score 60-41 with 7:29 left in the contest.
 
Lamar had four players in double figures. Andrew Holifield finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Errol White added 14 points and eight rebounds. Eian Lowe finished with 13 points.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Coleton Benson finished with 14 points and TJ Cope added 11 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Jakevion Buckley had nine points, nine assists and six rebounds. Churchill Abass added eight points and six rebounds.
