NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's tennis teams put forth another strong performance as they both completed 7-0 sweeps over the Coastal Alabama Coyotes on Friday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
In keeping with the theme this week, the entirety of the women's match was finished in under two hours.
Every singles match was finished in straight sets and no Privateer conceded more than three games in a set. Everyone got out to quick starts and never looked back.
Kateryna Kalistratova did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory at flight two.
Fleur Sprengers and
Danique Vermue only lost one game each in their singles victories.
Ananya Dhankhar closed the first set strong and won 6-3, 6-2.
Naila Krifa posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at flight five.
Nouray Khaled won by the same score line at flight three.
In doubles, Kalistratova and Khaled paired for an easy win by a 6-1 score. Krifa and Dhankhar did not lose a game at flight three. Sprengers and Vermue got an early service break and won their match 6-4.
"The women started playing with confidence and what happens when you start strong early it leads to that momentum," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "They achieved that today and the women played a solid match."
On the men's side, the Privateers had to endure several challenges but got through them all.
The doubles teams set the tone by winning 6-4 at flight one with
Beltran Fernandez and
Evgenios Vasilakis. The doubles teams at flights two and three both scored a 6-3 victory to give the Privateers the first point.
Carlos Melgosa blitzed his way through the first set on his way to a 6-0, 6-2 win at flight three in singles.
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly won by double breaks in each of his sets, scoring a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Marius Gyllerup held off a late charge in the second set of a 6-2, 6-4 victory at flight six.
Beltran Fernandez and Vasilakis each won tiebreak sets. Fernandez won his tiebreak in the first set and dominated the second, winning 7-6 (3), 6-1. Vasilakis rallied to win his tiebreak in the second set, which closed out the match in his favor 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Gonzalo Cotter was the last to finish and after losing the second set, Cotter rebounded by winning six of the last seven points in the 10-point tiebreak. Cotter finished with a winner on a return to clinch the sweep 6-2, 5-7, 10-5.
"I think there's a fitness element and a mental element to be able to come through in the tight situations Evgenios and Gonzalo did today," said Kanga. "Across the board, I was really pleased that they played where the percentages favored them."
