NEW ORLEANS – The UTRGV Vaqueros got out to a hot start on offense and led throughout as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 95-76 on Saturday evening at the Lakefront Arena to extend their winning streak to seven games.
After going 3-for-10 to start, the Privateers ripped off a run of six consecutive field goals yet they found themselves trailing by eight points at the end of that stretch after UTRGV made 10 of their first 15 shots.
New Orleans made just two field goals in the last 7:47 of the first half and UTRGV made eight three-pointers in 16 attempts on their end to post a 51-34 lead at the break. The Vaqueros had three scorers in double figures by halftime.
UTRGV started the second half with three-pointers on their first two possessions to quickly extend the lead to 23 points. The Vaqueros grew their lead to as large as 31 points in the second half. They made 13 three-pointers on the night and had a 42-27 advantage on the glass. The Vaqueros also had 17 offensive rebounds to the Privateers' eight.
Filip Brankovic had 24 points to lead the Vaqueros. Koree Cotton finished with 21 points while Marvin McGhee added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jakevion Buckley had 23 points on 9-of-13 from the field to lead the Privateer offense. He also had seven rebounds and four assists.
TJ Cope and
Coleton Benson each had 11 points.
Hercy Miller scored his first points in a Privateer uniform as he had four on the night.
Churchill Abass had eight points.
