NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team finished the week off with another sweep as they defeated the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.
Carlos Melgosa and
Gonzalo Cotter helped set the tone early as they took a hold of their doubles match and did not drop a game, which would become an even bigger theme in singles. The Privateers then got a victory by a double break from
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly and
Marius Gyllerup by a 6-2 score.
The Wolves won their lone match at flight one doubles by saving two break points to win their tilt 6-3.
In singles, Cotter and Gyllerup both won their matches without dropping a single game. They both got into points quickly and efficiently as they both sealed 6-0, 6-0 victories to put the Privateers up 3-0.
Evgenios Vasilakis and
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly were the next to finish. Vasilakis got a late service break to surge ahead and used that momentum to take the second set 6-0. He ended the match by winning eight straight games. Meanwhile, Rouleau-Mailly won his match 6-2, 6-0.
Beltran Fernandez posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at flight two, which left just Melgosa's match for the sweep. Melgosa and Bucek traded service breaks early in the second set, but Carlos won the last three games in succession to put the finishing touches on a 6-2, 6-4 decision.
"They played well today and got the job done," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "I think now the schedule gets a little stronger but overall I'm pleased with what we've done so far. We still have a young team but I'm proud of the way they have executed the game plan each match."
