NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team made a strong late push but were denied by the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in a 4-2 loss on Thursday at the Privateer Tennis Center.
North Dakota got out to a quick start in doubles. Their flight one pair of Ethel Li and Jule Schulte won the first five games on their way to a 6-1 victory. At flight three, Alyssa Giupponi and Emma Roberts also got out to a quick start, building a 4-1 lead and securing a victory by a double break.
In singles, the Privateers got on the board through a clinical performance by
Fleur Sprengers. The sophomore snagged the first set from Li and used that momentum to dominate the second in a 6-4, 6-0 win.
North Dakota got back in front thanks to Andrea Pineda's flight three victory where she dropped just three games. The Fighting Hawks extended their match lead to 3-1 after Giupponi won 7-5, 6-4 at flight five.
New Orleans threatened a comeback that started when
Kateryna Kalistratova secured a late break in the second set then held serve to secure a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Schulte at flight two.
The two remaining matches were featuring
Danique Vermue and
Ananya Dhankhar. Both women bounced back from losing the first set to take the second in their respective matches.
Alva Norberg though won the last five games in succession to take her third set and give the Fighting Hawks their tenth victory of the season. Dhankhar was on serve, leading 2-1 in her third set when the match was clinched.
