Fernandez, Yasin Pick Up Points in Loss to Omaha

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team put up a strong battle but fell on the short end of a 5-2 decision against the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday at the Privateer Tennis Center.

The Mavericks took a hotly contested doubles point to begin the day. Anthony Scheglowski and Liam Spiers secured a late service break to win at flight two 6-4. The flight three match saw Ethan Gaubert and Bryan Kuntz break serve to stay in the match and tie the score at 5-5.

The flight three doubles bout eventually went to a tiebreak, which Gaubert and Kuntz won 7-4 to give Omaha the first point. Carlos Melgosa and Beltran Fernandez were also in a tiebreak and went unfinished after they rallied from down 4-1.

The Mavericks got the first point on the board in singles when Caleb Peterson won 6-3, 6-2 at flight six. Kuntz put the Mavericks on the doorstep with his 6-3, 6-4 win at flight one.

That was quickly followed by Fernandez getting the Privateers on the board. Fernandez scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Christian Trevey to get New Orleans their first point of the afternoon.

The other three matches to finish all went well over two hours and finished in three sets.

Spiers got the clinching point for Omaha as he rallied from a set down to take a hard fought battle 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Maddox Lundell added to the total for Omaha by taking his third set 6-0.

The Privateers got the final point of the day when Jerall Yasin rallied back from down a set to beat Pavan Uppu. Yasin, who played at flight four on the day, won a second set tiebreak to extend the match. He took the third set by a single break to win 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
