NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team got going by winning the doubles point and used that momentum to notch their first conference win of the year by a 5-2 score over Lamar.
The men's team played a nail biter that saw four singles matches go to three sets in a 5-2 loss in their conference opener against Lamar.
WOMEN'S RECAP
The ladies got the first point on the board thanks to their flights two and three pairs.
Kateryna Kalistratova and
Ananya Dhankhar, playing together for the second time this season, won their match 6-3.
Nouray Khaled and
Naila Krifa also pushed their way to a 6-3 win at flight three to give the Privateers the first point.
In singles, New Orleans got a pair of three-set wins. Kalistratova rallied from a set down and took over her match, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Also, Dhankhar bounced back from dropping the first set to take a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision.
New Orleans also got wins from
Fleur Sprengers and Krifa. Sprengers notched her tenth singles win of the year by taking two long sets in a 7-5, 6-4 win at flight one. Krifa was in control throughout her match winning 6-3, 6-2.
The win moved New Orleans to 1-2 in conference play.
MEN'S RECAP
Four of the six singles matches went to three sets but the Cardinals took three of them which was a big part of the difference in the 5-2 decision at the Privateer Tennis Center.
The Cardinals started the day by winning the doubles point. Though
Peter Kieslinger and
Jerall Yasin scored a win at flight three for the Privateers it was not enough to take the opening point.
Lamar won 6-1 at flight one and 6-4 at flight two as part of an early lead.
Maxwell Lindstedt, Vicente Monge and Louis Drapeau all won their matches in three sets. Lindstedt and Drapeau came back from losing the first set at flight two and six respectively.
The other three-set match went the way of the Privateers as
Gonzalo Cotter rebounded from losing a tough tiebreak in the first set to defeat Fabian Anthin 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 which gave the Privateers one of their two points on the day.
The other came from
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly who finished strong in his match against Leon Nickel with a 6-4, 6-1 win at flight one.
NEXT UP
Both teams will face UIW on Monday with the women to play at 11 a.m. and the men to follow at 2 p.m.
