Alpha English

Alpha English enters his 12th season as an assistant coach for the New Orleans Privateers women's basketball program, joining the staff during the 2011-12 season.

English's main responsibilities includes working with guards and scouting. 

Under his tutelage, guard Randi Brown was named a three-time all-conference selection and finished amongst the greats in Privateer history across multiple scoring categories. Brown also won a host of honors including being a four-time All-LSWA selection (twice first team) and a three-time All-Southland pick. Guard Kayla Mundy also earned all-conference honorable mention and most recently, Rehema Franklin added both Southland All-Conference and All-LSWA selections after helping the Privateers to the most conference wins in program history during the 2019-20 season.  

In 2014-15, English worked primarily with the post players. Highlight performances included the emergence of Halie Matthews as a true freshman and Yasmin Taylor landing in the Top-10 in the Southland in offensive rebounds and steals. 

English came to UNO as an assistant coach after a four-year stint on the Louisiana College women’s basketball coaching staff.  During his four years at LC, the Wildcats produced an 80-26 record with three NCAA Division III All-Americans, 17 All-Conference selections and 17 All-Academic honorees.

English’s tenure at LC included a stint as interim head basketball coach for the 2008-09 season, when at the age of 26, he directed the program to a 16-9 record and a berth in the American Southwest Conference tournament in the absence of then-head coach Janice Joseph-Richard, who was battling cancer.

Prior to his arrival in Louisiana, English was a member of the San Jose State women's basketball coaching staff from 2001 through 2007.

English began his career at SJSU as a student assistant before being promoted to video coordinator in 2004. A position as Director of Basketball Operations followed for the 2005-06 season before a one-year stint as assistant women's basketball coach in 2006-07.

As an undergraduate, English obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Marketing while at SJSU.

English and his wife Remy reside in New Orleans. The couple has two daughter, Proper Genesis English and Ace Reaux Remy English.
