The University of New Orleans volleyball team completed its staff for the 2016 season with the addition of veteran assistant coach Marko Majstorovic, third-year Privateers head coach Millicent Van Norden announced.
A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Majstorovic brings nearly a decade of experience at the Division level I to the UNO program after previously serving as the first assistant coach at Nicholls from 2014-2015, the University of Memphis from 2008-2012 and the University of Oregon from 2005-2006. He will work primarily with the New Orleans’ outside and right-side hitters while also assisting in all facets of match preparation and recruiting.
In his most recent stop prior to his arrival on the Lakefront, Majstorovic spent two seasons at Southland Conference foe Nicholls where he served as the team’s top assistant. Focusing primarily on the outside hitters, Majstorovic helped the unit double its total victories in his first season there and made a trip to the Southland Conference tournament while helping Nicholls’ outside hitter Kaci Eaton earn second-team All-SLC recognition.
Before Nicholls, Majstorovic served as the first assistant coach at the University of Memphis for five seasons, highlighted by a 2008 campaign where the Tigers led Conference USA in blocks. Under his guidance, three Memphis student-athletes garnered All-America honors, four claimed AVCA All-Region recognition and nine earned All-Conference USA distinction. The Tigers qualified for the Conference USA Tournament in his first season there and eclipsed 20 wins during the 2011 campaign.
Majstorovic began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Oregon in 2005 where he helped rebuild the Ducks’ program as an assistant coach. In 2006 the team cracked the AVCA top-25 poll for the first time since 1991 and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1989.
On an international level, the newest member of the UNO volleyball program has experience on the coaching staff of the national teams of both Yugoslavia and Serbia. Majstorovic worked with the U17 and U15 teams while assisting the head coach in selecting the players for the European and World Championship. In his three seasons there, his teams posted top finishes of second at the European Championship and third at the World Championship as well as claiming the Balkan Championship gold medal all three seasons.
Majstorovic began his coaching career in Serbia where he coached the Radnicki Volleyball Club’s youth women’s teams. Under his tenure, the U17 squad won a state title while the Pro League team finished second.
