NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans volleyball team extended
their winning streak to three with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-22 25-15) win over
North Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.
The
win gave UNO (17-9, 10-5 SBC) a conference weekend sweep for the first
time since early October when they defeated both South Alabama and Troy.
Leading the Privateers was
Lindsey Loyd with 13 kills.
Edina Dobi had 12 while
Dobrilla Kovacevic tacked on 10.
Jaci Bayley had 34 assists to pace the Privateer offense while
Nicky Valenti led the defensive efforts with nine digs.
NT
(6-22, 4-11 SBC) had a two-match win streak snapped as they attempt to
pick up enough wins down the stretch to qualify for the Sun Belt
Conference tournament.
Roxana Casvean and Amy Huddleston led the
attack with 12 and eight kills, respectively. Marelle Lempets had 30
assists for the Mean Green while Sarah Willey had a team-high nine digs.
As
they did on Friday, UNO came out of the gates strong, hitting at a .643
clip during a run that saw the Privateers jump out to a 12-4 advantage.
The Mean Green responded with a 11-3 run that tied the game at 15
apiece.
NT would take their first lead at 17-16 and maintain it
until a Loyd kill put the host squad on top 22-21. After another point
for UNO increased the advantage to two, the Mean Green had the momentum
go their way to take a 24-23 lead.
UNO held off four set points
by NT before finally getting one of their own at 28-27. A Kovacevic
kill, her sixth of the stanza, closed out set in favor of the
Privateers 29-27. Kovacevic also had seven digs during the set while
Loyd led all hitters on the court with seven.
Not wanting to
chance another Mean Green comeback, UNO scored 5 of 6 points to open
the second frame. NT would work their way back into the set, tying the
scoring up at 13. The Privateers would grab control of the frame with
three straight points, an advantage that would hold up as UNO claimed
the set 25-22.
A 5-4 UNO advantage to open the third set quickly
grew to 10 points as the Privateers went on a 13-3 run to take a 18-8
lead. The Mean Green would pull within eight at 21-13, but that was as
close as they would get as the Privateers closed out the final set
25-15.
The Privateers will next see the court on Tuesday in
Monroe, La. when they face the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe in their
final road contest of the regular season.
