TROY, Ala. - The University of New Orleans rallied from a 16-point
second half deficit to take a 64-59 victory over Troy at Trojan Arena
on Wednesday night.
UNO (9-10, 4-4 Sun Belt) trailed 38-22 with 17:31 remaining, before
coming alive, outscoring the Trojans 42-17 down the stretch highlighted
by a 7-0 run by
Cookie Johnson that saw the Lady Privateers take their
first lead of the game, 53-52.
Brittany Helm led UNO in scoring with 17 points while
Candice McGee
netted her first career double-double, pouring in 14 points while
grabbing 14 rebounds.
Jada Frazier and
Ty Felder rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 apiece.
Kylie Morrissy, who only scored two points in the opening half, scored
16 in the second half to finish with 18 for Troy (8-10, 3-5 SBC).
The Trojans' Donette McNair finished with a double-double with 16
points and 11 rebounds after scoring 10 points and grabbing six
rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Things did not look for the Lady Privateers, who after tying the score
at four on a McGee jumper with 17:39 left in the opening half, were
held to just one field goal over the next nine minutes as the Trojans
went on a 12-2 run to take a 17-6 lead.
The Trojan advantage grew to 16 at 28-12 with 4:54 remaining in the
half before UNO scored 8 of the final 10 points in the opening half to
cut the Troy lead to 10, 30-20 at the half.
Morrissy made consecutive three-pointers as the Trojans built their
lead to 16 with 17:31 remaining in the game, before UNO stepped their
game up.
The Lady Privateers struggled to get the lead under 10 before a Helm
three-pointer closed the gap to eight with 12:03 remaining. A Frazier
three-pointer three minutes later brought UNO within five, 46-41, the
closest they had been to the Trojans since 9-4.
Needing someone to step up, down 52-48, Johnson was up to the task,
going on her own seven point run as UNO took a 55-52 advantage.
The Lady Privateers would not look back from that point forward as Troy
would be forced to foul in the final minute, as UNO, who made their
first 11 free throws on the game, closed out the contest. Frazier made
two free throws with 20 seconds left while Helm made three in the final
13 seconds.
The Lady Privateers will return home on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m.
contest against Middle Tennessee, in what will serve as the team's
"Pink Zone" game to raise funds for breast cancer research.
