NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's and women's basketball programs will compete in a doubleheader at Dent Hall on Dillard's campus on Thursday night.
The women's contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Periodic statistical updates will be available on UNOPrivateers.com.
In the women's contest, a pair of UNO alum will square off on opposing sidelines as the Lady Privateers (0-7) coached by Keeshawn Carter challenge Kiki Baker-Barnes' Lady Bleu Devils (1-4). Both head coaches played basketball under Joey Favaloro with Baker-Barnes also competing in track and field, where to this day, she still holds the school triple jump record.
Carter's squad is seeking their first win on the season after dropping their first seven of the slate, the most recent coming in a 96-35 setback against Big East foe Marquette on Tuesday night.
Mirjam Sipos is the top scorer for UNO with 12.1 points per game followed by
Yosha Watson who adds nine points a contest to her team-best 7.8 rebounds.
The Lady Bleu Devils enter the contest on a two-game losing streak.
Jazzmin Smith is the top scorer with 11 points per contest and has scored at least 12 points in the last three games, despite shooting just 26.1 percent from the field for the season. Jasmine Bradley is the top rebounding threat for DU with 7.8 grabs off the glass a game, including 13 last week against Langston.
In the night cap, head coach
Mark Slessinger's squad will look to improve on their 4-4 record.
The UNO men's basketball team defeated Division I Alcorn State on Sunday and will be playing the first of seven games against the Crescent City's NAIA schools in what mimics the 'City Series' that packed gymnasiums across New Orleans in the 1970s.
Antonio Wertz and
Lovell Cook are averaging 11.6 points per game to pace the Privateers, who will be seeking their first road win of the campaign after losing all four contests away from Lakefront Arena.
Across the court, the DU men are 0-9 under the tutelage of first-year head coach Bernard Griffith. The Bleu Devils have dropped contests against three NCAA Division I opponents thus far and are being outscored by an average of 20 points per game.
Terry Church is the leading scorer with 12.3 points per game with three others averaging at least nine. DU averages 18 turnovers a game and will look to protect the ball from a UNO team that forces an average of 21 turnovers a contest.
Following Thursday's doubleheader, both UNO men and women teams will take time off for finals.
The Privateers will resume play on Dec. 10 at Lakefront Arena against Johnson & Wales (Fla.) with the Lady Privateers getting back on the road for a Dec. 11 meeting against Birmingham Southern.
