BATON ROUGE, La. – The New Orleans volleyball program extended its win streak to three matches with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-10, 25-19) victory over Southern on Wednesday night at the Clifford Seymour Gymnasium.
The UNO (7-11) defense stepped up to the challenge in the match, blocking a season-high nine SU (2-18) attacks and holding the hosts to a 0.072 hitting percentage for the match.
Taylor Berry led the Privateers with five blocks while three other members of the roster had a hand on at least three blocks.
Lauren Levy played a significant role on the defensive end by handling 22 digs.
Offensively,
Brionne Smith paced the victorious squad with 14 kills, one shy of her career-high. Berry and
Laila Hansen added 10 and nine kills for UNO, respectively.
Ariane Labrzycki distributed a career-best 38 assists with
Ryan Hamilton contributing another 11.
The loss was the second this season for SU against the Privateers, having dropped a 3-0 decision at the Human Performance Center on Sept. 26. The Jaguars received nine kills apiece from Amber Smith and Jacquia Bell. Michelle Williams totaled 15 digs with Chanda Journet handling 25 assists.
The Privateers struggled at the onset of the match, falling behind 6-2. UNO's first lead of the opening frame came at 11-10 following a block by the duo of Hansen and Smith. Following a tie at 15-all, the Privateers scored six straight points on Levy's serve to gain its first significant advantage and the set 25-20.
The second frame featured numerous ties before UNO emerged from the back-and-forth affair with a pair of set-point opportunities at 24-22. The guests could not finish the stanza with the victory, allowing SU to respond with three straight points and 5 of 6 to knot the match with a 27-25 win.
Following the intermission, the Privateers made it clear that they would not let one slip away again producing dominating performances in the final two sets.
UNO held the Jaguars a -.333 hitting percentage in the third frame, gaining control of the set with an early 6-0 run. The Privateers put an exclamation point on the stanza with a 9-0 spurt during Berry's serve midway through the frame en route to a convincing 25-10 win.
The momentum carried over into the fourth set for UNO, which jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage. The lead grew to 10 points at 21-11 before SU rallied to within four at 22-18. A Labrzycki service ace down the stretch was one of three for the Privateers in the final frame and put the momentum back in the hands of the guests, who completed the match with a 25-19 victory.
UNO will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Houston Baptist. HBU claimed the first meeting between the squads by a 3-0 result on Sept. 23 at the HPC.
