NEW ORLEANS – McNeese State bounced back from an early deficit to defeat the University of New Orleans 3-1 (18-25, 25-8, 25-15, 25-14) on Tuesday at Human Performance Center.

MSU (3-10) received 14 kills from Courtni Bauer in defeating UNO (3-8) in its 2012 home opener. The trio of Carly DeMarque, Amber Fryer and Megan Carlton had 10 kills apiece for the Cowgirls, contributing to an offense that hit .413 for the match.

The Privateers started off strong in the contest, hitting .300 in the opening set while holding MSU to a match-low .111 hitting clip. After the teams battled through five ties and three leads, UNO emerged midway through the frame and held on for a 25-18 victory.

In the second set, the Cowgirls were a much different team offensively. MSU hit .520 in the second set and built on their production offensively with a .615 attack percentage in the third frame.

The offensive spurt allowed the Cowgirls to remain in the lead from the start of each stanza and maintain their advantage on way to grabbing a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

A trio of ties and a single lead change occurred at the onset of the fourth stanza. MSU broke an early tie at 4-all with a 6-0 run to remain in the driver's seat on way to claiming the match with a 25-14 victory.

UNO was led in defeat by Laila Hansen's nine kills. Brionne Smith and Taylor Berry produced matching eight kills apiece while Ryan Hamilton was responsible for 34 assists. Elena Villar topped the squad with nine digs.

The Privateers will continue their homestand with a match on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Houston Baptist.
