Privateers Fall in Three to Future SLC Rival Huskies

NEW ORLEANS - Houston Baptist picked up a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-14) victory over the University of New Orleans on Sunday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.

HBU (9-8) setter Victoria Weatherly played a major role in aiding the team to a .447 attack percentage in the contest. Caiti Wenger was on the receiving end on 15 of the 28 kills set up by Weatherly for the match.

Freshman middle blocker Brionne Smith led UNO (3-9) with seven kills for the match. Setter Ariana Labryzycki made her debut for the Privateers with 16 assists.

A pair of runs enabled HBU to claim the opening set. The Huskies utilized four straight points to break a tie at 9-all before a 5-0 run later in the frame pushed the visiting squad towards winning the first stanza.

HBU jumped on UNO early in the second set, scoring the first eight points of the frame. Brionne Smith stopped the run by producing a kill for the Privateers. The Huskies continued to add points to their tally, before entering the break with a 2-0 lead.

One set away from victory, HBU refused to allow UNO to gain an advantage in the third frame. The Huskies scored the first three points and 12 of the first 16 to remain in the driver's seat on way to the finish.

The Privateers will hit the road on Tuesday for a match at Jackson State before returning to the HPC on Wednesday to face Southern. First serve on Wednesday is 7 p.m.
