UNO Volleyball Defeated at Jackson State

Privateers Return Home Wednesday to Face Southern

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State defeated the University of New Orleans 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-20) on Tuesday night at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.

Christine Edwards led JSU (5-11) with nine kills in 18 attacks without a single error. The Tigers' primary offensive player contributed a team-high seven service aces, part of a 16-ace performance by the hosts.

Three players tallied at least five kills in the match for UNO (3-10). Marti Richmiller led the trio with six kills with Laila Hansen and Elena Villar adding five kills apiece.  

Ariane Labrzycki totaled 11 of the Privateers' 17 assists in the contest with Richmiller matching Lauren Levy with a team-best five digs.

UNO had to play from behind in the opening two frames. JSU scored the first five points of the first stanza, including a trio on Edwards' service aces. The Tigers continued to build on their lead and closed the frame by scoring the final six points.

The momentum continued on JSU's side in the second set as the hosts scored the first three points. The Privateers rallied with three points of their own before to knot the scoring in the frame before the Tigers grabbed control. Leading 9-6, JSU scored eight of the next nine points to build a significant advantage, enabling the squad to take a 2-0 lead in the set count.

In the third set, UNO provided their own service success as Villar produced consecutive aces to open the scoring. The teams exchanged leads for the first 18 contested points of the frame before a 5-1 spurt provided the push the Tigers needed towards closing out the match.

The Privateers will return home to the Human Performance Center on Wednesday to resume their 2012 schedule against Southern. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
