NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans bounced back in the win column with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-23) win at the Human Performance Center on Wednesday night against Southern.
UNO (4-10) used a balanced attack offensively with all five primary offensive players in the starting lineup putting forth at least six kills.
Marti Richmiller led the effort with a career-high 14 kills as the Privateers snapped an eight-match losing streak.
Laila Hansen posted nine kills for UNO while
Elena Villar and
Brionne Smith tallied eight kills apiece.
Taylor Berry rounded out the offensive production by the starters for head coach Kim Young-Buford with six kills.
Setter
Ariane Labrzycki played a large part in the Privateers hitting .242 for the contest. Making her first start of the season, the junior setter established a career-high with 37 assists as UNO produced its best offensive effort since a Sept. 5 win against Alcorn State.
UNO and SU (1-12) battled through 11 ties and five lead changes in the opening frame. Trailing 24-21, Berry rattled off consecutive kills during a 3-0 Privateer run that sent the stanza into 'extra points'. The Jaguars gained one more set point before UNO closed out the frame 27-25 with yet another 3-0 run.
The momentum remained in the Privateers' favor in the second stanza. Leading 11-10, UNO reeled off 11 of 12 points, including a run of six straight on Labrzycki's serve to keep in the driver's seat and maintain a 2-0 edge at intermission.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair featuring 17 ties and seven lead changes. When it mattered most, SU could not covert as an attack error by the Jaguars' Amber Shelby set up the match-closing kill for Villar a point later.
Marisol Macias totaled 10 kills for SU in defeat with Chanda Journet pacing the offense with 27 assists. The Privateers'
Lauren Levy led all players with 16 digs.
UNO will continue its four-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 2 against Nicholls State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
