Privateers Defeat Alcorn State

NEW ORLEANS, La – The New Orleans Privateers snapped a six-game losing streak with a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-14) victory on Tuesday night in the Human Performance Center over visiting Alcorn State.

The first set got off to a back-and-forth start with the teams tied 5-5, but the Privateers (3-16, 0-6, Southland) capitalized on three scoring runs of four or more points, including a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to close it out.

UNO continued its dominance over the Lady Braves (0-14, 0-3 SWAC) as the Privateers jumped out to a 7-3 lead. Alcorn State pulled within three but was unable to sustain the 6-0 run by the Privateers to make it 19-9. UNO finished the set cleanly to take control of the match going into the third set.

In the third set, UNO got in front early and never looked back after leading 13-9 and rattling off a 5-0 run to make it 18-9. The Lady Braves could not any closer than eight points down as the Privateers closed out the match.

Sophomore Alyssa Podwell established a career high with 11 kills, and sophomore Celeste Ramirez led the front with 26 assists. Lauren Levy was a digs machine as she piled up 16 in that category. Freshman Brooklyn Frank added a notable statistic as she provided the winning points in both of the final sets.

The Privateers will look to make it two in a row at home as they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the Human Performance Center.  That contest will be followed by a match Saturday versus Houston Baptist at 2 p.m. to close out a three-game home stand.
