Privateers Pull Away from Millsaps

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's basketball team opened the season on a high note as they defeated Millsaps College 81-45 at the Lakefront Arena Tuesday night.
 
The Privateers started the season with a bang as guard John Reese drained a three-point shot to open the scoring for UNO. Millsaps kept the game competitive early in the first half, but the Privateers built an 18-10 lead halfway through the period. UNO finished the half leading 37-24. The Privateers shot 44.8 percent from the field in the first half, which bested Millsaps' 30 percent from the field.
 
After the break, UNO pulled away and increased their lead to 56-38 with just under 10 minutes to go in the second half. The Privateers stayed in control as they finished off the game with a solid defensive effort out-rebounding Millsaps 51-35. Millsaps did, however, control the free-throw line as the Majors shot 60.9 percent (14-23) from the foul line. UNO was 48.6 percent (18-37) from the line.
 
Forward Cory Dixon led the way for the Privateers and notched a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Dixon also had three blocks and delt out three assists. Forward Terrance Syon nearly posted a double-double with 11 boards to go with his seven points. Guard Nate Frye also hit double digits in points with 11. Frye also had four steals and four assists.
 
Senior guard Ryan Berger led the way for the Majors with 10 points. Fellow senior guard Tully Gilligan led Millsaps in rebounds with eight and also had four steals.
 
Next up for the Privateers is a trip to the state capital on November 19 as they take on the LSU Tigers at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at 7 p.m. UNO's next home game is on November 23 against Boise State. Tip off for that game is set for 11 a.m.
