LAKE CHARLES, La. - The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (6-20, 0-12 Southland) could not overcome a slow start in a 3-0 loss (25-6, 25-21, 25-12) to the McNeese State Cowgirls (13-14, 3-8) on Thursday at Memorial Gym.
After a solo block by
Rondolyn Bryant tied the score at 2-2, McNeese State hit a 17-1 run to put the set out of reach. At the start of the run, Malina Sanchez had back-to-back service aces. The Cowgirls ran their attack behind Rebecca Koronek who had eight kills in the first set.
The second set started on a much better note for the Privateers. After falling behind by four early on, New Orleans hit a three-point spurt behind two aces to cut the McNeese State lead to 10-9. The teams traded rallies for a while before a 6-1 spurt gave the Cowgirls enough separation to eventually close the set.
In the third set, McNeese State raced out to an early 6-1 lead and never looked back. The Cowgirls' service game accounted for 10 service aces and their attack percentage was .521 on the night. The 3-0 win was the third straight victory via a sweep for McNeese State.
The Privateers were led offensively by Bryant who had five kills. Bryant also chipped in two solo blocks at the net.
Cara Sander and
Sophie Gracey had four kills each.
Lauren Levy led the way in digs with seven.
Korenek led the Cowgirls' attack with 14 kills. Rachel Cagnina added seven kills to the attack and Sanchez also added seven kills along with three aces. Kimberlyn Patterson had 11 digs and the Cowgirls had a 45-20 advantage in the kill department.
The Privateers will next travel to Thibodaux to take on the Nicholls Colonels. First serve is for 2 p.m.
