POSTMATCH INTERVIEW
Assistant Coach Jen Gandolph
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers (5-11, 0-4 Southland) committed 13 attack errors in the first set and could not recover, falling 3-0 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (8-11, 1-1) on Saturday at the Human Performance Center.
New Orleans dug an early 4-0 hole, and Coach
Millicent Van Norden had used both timeouts in the set after the 11th rally with the Privateers trailing 9-2. Despite the wide margin in the opening set, the Privateers did hold a narrow edge in the kill department.
"We talked a lot about not starting in a hole, and immediately were down 4-0," said Privateers Assistant Coach Jennifer Gandolph in reference to the early timeouts the Privateers called.
The second set started much more promising for the Privateers who raced out to an early 7-3 lead. The run was capped by a Brooklyn Frank service ace that tripped the tape and squeezed over onto the Islanders side of the court. However, the Islanders ripped off an 11-1 run afterward to seize the lead and command of the set. The Islanders had a 15-4 advantage in kills in the second set.
The Islanders raced out to a 12-4 lead to start the third set, and got more contributions in the service game. After recording two aces in the first two sets combined, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi notched five aces in the third and final set to help seal the victory. Five different Islanders recorded an ace in the match.
Cara Sander led the Privateers in kills with five. Ro Bryant had four kills and assisted on three of the Privateers' five blocks on the match. Frank and
Sara Hammoutene co-led the Privateers in digs with eight each.
The Islanders were led in kills by Ashley Phelps and Briana Brink who had six each. Haley Satterwhite, Brittany Gilpin, and Kelsee Felux each added five kills. Hailey King led the way in digs with 13. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hit .333 on the match while the Privateers were limited to a hitting percentage of -.078.
New Orleans will be back in action on Sept. 30 at Alcorn State. The Privateers will return home on Oct. 2 against Central Arkansas.
