HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (6-8, 0-1) struggled defensively, committing four errors in the field in a 12-4 loss to the Sam Houston State Bearkats (6-8, 1-0) on Friday at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats took the lead for good in a four-run third inning that occurred after a ground ball that could have been an inning ending double play was booted. Zach Smith grounded one to short, but the ball was bobbled allowing runners safely into first and second with one away. Travis Lee then dropped in a single to give the Bearkats a 2-1 lead.

With two outs, Dylan Ebbs followed with a two-run single of his own. Spence Rahm missed a home run, curling one foul but drove a single the opposite way on the next pitch to push the Sam Houston State lead to 5-1 after the frame was finished.

Sam Houston State added three more in the next frame that also saw a Privateers error on a sac bunt by Miles Manning. The Bearkats got another two runs driven in by Lee who singled up the middle to push the lead to 8-1. The advantage eventually grew to 12-1 as the Bearkats pounded out 15 hits on the night.

The Privateers pushed across three runs in the ninth inning, all with two outs. Ray Veit reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Parker Jones. After a single loaded the bases, Preston Marsh knocked a base hit up the middle to drive in the final two runs.

After Sam Houston State scored in the first inning, the Privateers responded with three consecutive one-out singles to tie the game. Samuel Capielano then singled on the infield and Chaz Boyer was looking to score from second after the ball deflected off the tip of the glove of Jake MacWilliam. However, Boyer was thrown out at home.

Alex Smith gave up nine runs over five innings, but only two of those runs were earned. Jay Robinson, Ryan Calloway, and Boyer each had two hits. Jonathan Coco went 1-for-4 with a walk and has now reached safely in 13 of 14 games.

Lee and Rahm each had three hits while Lee also drove in three runs. Ebbs was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Andrew Godail went seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out four. Jordan Church finished the game and all three of his runs surrendered were unearned.

The series will close with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
