Privateers Squander Early Chances in Loss to Southeastern

NEW ORLEANS, La.
– The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (14-38, 3-25 Southland) left a couple of opportunities on the table in the first two innings and were shut out 5-0 by the Southeastern Lions (39-15, 23-5) on Thursday night at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.

The Privateers left two runners on in each of the first two innings. After back-to-back runners reached with one out in the first, Southeastern pitcher Tate Scioneaux got a fly out and a grounder into a fielder's choice to end the inning. The second inning saw New Orleans get the first two aboard with singles, but no runs came across.

In the third, Southeastern broke into the run column in part due to errors and their speed on the base paths. After a Julian Service single, he then stole second. An error on the infield brought Service in as he scored from second. The next run scored when Jacob Seward tried to steal home and was called safe on a catcher's balk.

The opportunities got slimmer for the Privateers as the game wore along. Meanwhile, Jordan Priddle was able to tie his longest outing of the season, throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run (three total). Priddle walked three and struck out three in 99 pitches thrown. The third run Priddle gave up was in the fifth on an RBI sac fly.

The Lions added solo runs in the eighth and ninth. Kevin Carr hit a solo home run for his fourth round tripper of the season. The final run came across on a wild pitch. The Lions clinched their first regular season Southland title in school history with the victory.

Sam Carriere moved his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the first and went 2-for-3 on the night. Jonathan Santana and Zane Pitzer also added two hits each while Cameron Hoffman went 1-for-2. The Privateers committed three errors in the field and dropped their eighth straight game. It was also the eighth time this season New Orleans was shut out.

At the plate, Service went 3-for-4 with two runs. The top three batters in the Lions order were held to just one hit in 10 at-bats. Scioneaux did not allow a walk in his fourth complete game of the season while recording six strikeouts. Scioneaux threw 85 of his 116 pitches for strikes.

The series continues on Friday in Hammond. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
