"We couldn't be happier to have Corey as a part of our Privateer basketball family," said New Orleans head coach Mark Slessinger. "He comes from a highly respected program at Belmont under coach (Rick) Byrd, who is a coach that I have the utmost respect for in their approach and execution of running their program. Corey brings a great skill set for a young coach who will be able to add to our staff and help move us forward towards our championship goals. He has a tremendous work ethic, drive and is very intelligent."

While in Nashville, Tenn., Schmidt assisted in all aspects of the basketball program at Belmont from recruiting, to practices to scouting while helping lead the Bruins to a pair of 20-win seasons.

Schmidt also gained coaching experience in the AAU ranks, working with the Upward Stars as well as working as an individual skill development coach at Pure Sweat Basketball.

While working as a student assistant for the Belmont men's basketball team from 2009-13, Schmidt also completed his bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in communication, graduating with honors.
