NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers (8-8) ran efficiently on offense early, but could not answer the Tulane Green Wave (7-7) service game in a 3-1 loss (25-18, 15-25, 25-16, 25-19) on Tuesday night at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Tulane used the service game to help set the tone in the fourth set, racing out to a 5-3 lead. After the Privateers got back-to-back points on Tulane attack errors, the Green Wave scored nine straight which included three service aces. The Green Wave had 13 aces total on the night. New Orleans could get no closer than within five points for the rest of the set.
The Green Wave went on an early 5-0 spurt to take a four-point lead in the first set. Tulane used a .476 hitting percentage and limited the Privateers to five digs. New Orleans hit .290 for the opening set, but the Green Wave kept command of the set throughout.
The second set saw the Privateers turn the tables and limit Tulane to just a .026 hitting percentage while continuing to run an efficient offense. The big shot came when New Orleans went on a 10-0 run to take a seven-point lead as Tulane used both timeouts during that run. The Privateers had 22 digs in the second set.
Out of the halftime break, New Orleans got out to a 5-2 lead in the third set. The Green Wave responded by scoring six of the next seven points, which included a rotational error. The Privateers trailed by five, but strung together three straight to cut the deficit to two and force a Tulane timeout. The Green Wave came out of the stoppage strong though, finishing the set on an 8-1 run.
Blessing Dunn notched a double-double, recording 14 kills and 15 digs. Also landing in double figures in kills were
Kaitlyn Grice and
Rondolyn Bryant who had 12 each.
Celeste Ramirez had 41 assists, five kills, 10 digs, and four blocks (all assist). Grice also added four blocks and the Privateers had seven total blocks as a team.
For the Green Wave, Tea Juric led all hitters with 18 kills and also contributed 19 digs. Juric also had four blocks (one solo, three assist). Sarah Ray added 13 kills, seven digs, and three total blocks while hitting .393. Makenzie Frieden had five service aces along with eight digs. Lisa Mordell led Tulane with 20 digs on the evening.
The Privateers turn back to conference play when they travel to Central Arkansas. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
