Privateers Drop First Match of New Orleans Invitational to Providence

Bryant Leads Offense With Six Kills

NEW ORLEANS, La.
– The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (2-2) could not overcome a Providence Friars offense (2-4) that hit .430 as the Friars won 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-14) on Friday night at the Human Performance Center.
 
The Privateers got out to an early 6-3 lead, but Providence responded with three straight kills as part of a 9-2 run to take a four-point advantage. The Friars remained in control from there, racking up 17 kills in the first set. Providence also doubled the Privateers' total in digs, registering 14 to New Orleans' seven to set the tone.
 
New Orleans kept close tabs throughout much of the second set. The Privateers fell behind early 7-4, but closed the gap to one on four different occasions. The Friars had a response each time and closed the set with a flurry on a 9-2 run.
 
In the third set, New Orleans kept the set close early as several different players got involved in the offense. The Friars saved another big run, scoring 10 of the next 13 points to build a seven-point advantage. The Privateers closed the gap back to four, but Providence finished the match by earning the last seven rallies in their favor.
 
New Orleans was out-paced in the kill department 46-24. For New Orleans, Rondolyn Bryant led the way with six kills. Blessing Dunn had five kills and two of the team's four aces. Kaitlyn Grice added four kills. Celeste Ramirez wound up with 12 assists and four digs. The Privateers had two team blocks on the night.
 
Providence had two players land in double figures in kills. Kayla Fitzgerald had 14 kills on 22 attempts while Emily Horner added 11 on 21 attempts. Abigail Dix chipped in with eight kills and Marina Rose had six. The Friars overcame a service game that saw seven serve errors. Michelle Cruz led the way in digs with 11.
 
New Orleans will be back in action twice on Saturday. The Privateers will play Eastern Washington at 10 a.m. and La Salle at 5 p.m.
